Alpha Baking Co. is proud to offer a line of products that meet the nutritional guidelines and standards set by the USDA, and which provide nutritional options for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). “The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day.” (USDA.gov) The program has a long history, and was instituted in 1946 with the passing of the National School Lunch Act, signed into law by President Harry Truman. In 2010, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act was passed, which, among other things, placed an increased emphasis on the importance of whole grains in schools.
Alpha Baking Company was happy to adapt to these new guidelines, and our white wheat breads were developed specifically with schools in mind. Children can be quite picky, and they tend to prefer the look and texture of white breads compared to wheat breads. In order to please the palate of children, while still providing nutritious meals come lunch time, Alpha Baking Company developed our white wheat breads. They have the look, taste, and softness of the white bread kids adore, but they’re whole grain rich and adhere to the guidelines of the NSLP. It’s a sneaky, but tasty way of ensuring students receive the nutrition they need come meal time.
School lunches are essential in keeping students healthy and focused, but as we all know, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Similar to the NSLP, the School Breakfast Program (SBP) guarantees that all children at participating schools have access to breakfast on school mornings. The whole grain requirements in place for the NSLP were applied to the SBP as well, and once again, Alpha Baking Company isready to meet these demands with the creation of our upcoming Lakehouse Bakehoue school line, created especially for schools and offering an extensive line of whole grain rich muffins. Our muffins come in a variety of flavors, with classics such as blueberry, double chocolate, and banana, just to name a few. These delicious sweet treats are perfect for breakfast, but also work equally well for lunch and snack time too. Since the new school lunch program began, Alpha Baking Company’s Research and Development team have been on the forefront of the changing school marketplace, and we continue to adapt and evolve to make sure our bread and muffins meet all current regulations. It’s also worth noting that our products are certified kosher by the Orthodox Union: our bread is certified Kosher Pareve, while our muffins are certified Kosher Dairy. Schools who offer our products can rest assured knowing that by serving our breads and muffins, their students are receiving a nutritious and enjoyable meal to power them through the school day.
